The characters were a little too comical to be credible. I would have liked a better explanation of the curse, but it’s something I can live without and I wonder if it’s better explained in the next book. I wasn’t ready for the magical elements to this plot but they did make things fun. While Jane meets the almost required ‘modern girl in a historical setting’ trope that all good YA historical novels seem to have, I still liked her. I immediately loved the 3rd wall breaking and the sarcastic comments and the very honest internal dialogue. But those trifling problems aren’t for Jane to worry about. Jane gets to be queen of England. My Lady Jane (The Lady Janies #1) by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi MeadowsĪt 16, Lady Jane Grey is about to be married off to a stranger and caught up in a conspiracy to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. Praise for Bright Burns the Night : "A dark and exciting sequel that radiates girl power." - Kirkus Reviews Praise for Dark Breaks the Dawn : "With its intricate, dazzling system of magic and a vibrant cast of characters caught in a devastating conflict between forces of light and darkness, this passionate, war-torn retelling of Swan Lake is not one to be missed! These stories takes us into the day to day reality of medieval religious and family life, as it is lived by a variety of people: from nuns, noble people, scholars, courtiers, merchants, hermetic spinsters and children.įans of the novels will find this collection delightful as the author explains the origins of these stories and the evolution of her protagonists in the novels these tales also serve as a great introduction to her work for newcomers. Many of the stories feature Catherine LeVendeur, the beloved protagonist of ten of Newman’s novels, and Solomon, Catherine’s Jewish merchant cousin. The stories take us into 12th century Europe and show with sympathy and humor, the astounding variety of good intentions gone wrong and the corruption of human desires. Sharan Newman’s reputation as a critically acclaimed writer of medieval mysteries continues with this collection of short stories, all previously published and collected here for the first time in Death Before Compline. The sunlit island, its mountains and beaches, its tapas and tennis courts, also promise an escape from the tensions simmering at home in Manhattan. The Vacationers offers all the delights of a fluffy, read-it-with-sunglasses-on-the-beach read, made substantial by the exceptional wit, insight, intelligence and talents of its author.”- People (four stars)Īn irresistible, deftly observed novel from the New York Times-bestselling author of All Adults Here and This Time Tomorrow- about the secrets, joys, and jealousies that rise to the surface over the course of an American family’s two-week stay in Mallorca.įor the Posts, a two-week trip to the Balearic island of Mallorca with their extended family and friends is a celebration: Franny and Jim are observing their thirty-fifth wedding anniversary, and their daughter, Sylvia, has graduated from high school. The two countries she loves to visit most are Great Britain, with its historic monuments and amazing country landscapes, and Japan, with its bustling urban life and exquisite mountain scenery. A militant optimist, she is also part of the Velociraptor Sisterhood (a fancy way of saying that she likes to read, write and discuss books with strong female characters), and she has traveled extensively in Europe and the Far East. She also likes to collect things: angels (they remind her of her late mother), tiny boxes from different countries or of fanciful shape, nineteenth century children's literature, and books about quantum physics-especially about the mystery of the dark energy in the universe. Once, while hiking, she saw a snow-white buck which allowed her to follow it nearly half a mile. She loves to visit a friend's little cabin in the Point Reyes National Seashore area, which has lots of trees, lots of animals, lots of beaches to walk on, and lots of places to hike. She lives in the Bay Area of California, with a backyard that is full of flowers, which she adores, especially with many different shades of roses. She has written over two dozen books for children and young adults, and has enjoyed writing every one of them.
