When Gracq published the novel in 1951, it was given the name Le rivage des Syrtes I don’t know whether the change of the English title was Richard Howard’s or not, but it’s an odd one. This book has so far been left out it’s a shame, because it’s one of his most accessible works. The Pushkin Press has been reissuing out-of-print editions of Gracq (most recently A Dark Stranger Turtle Point Press has been very slowly publishing untranslated works by Gracq. This particular novel hasn’t attracted much attention in English Columbia released it in 1986, Harvill seems to have put out a British edition in the late 1990s, and since then nothing. Julien Gracq was one of the writers the Surrealists wanted but they couldn’t get (like Roussel and De Chirico) his work shares something with their aesthetic, but it’s very much his own. This novel is one I that I return to this is my third time through.

Then, without any real warning, Rosalie, who is only two-years-old, dies. They go to corn mazes, and they investigate nature. She loves the book Louis-Night Salad, demanding to have it read to her “over and over.” The family, while strapped for cash, still manages small trips. Rosalie likes to pick up acorns and enjoys watching scenes from Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro and Ponyo. The husband and wife pair work and involve themselves in creative pursuits, and they also play and spend time with their daughter. Everything in the Hart household seems perfectly normal. Rosalie Lightning is a snapshot of the Hart family (Tom, his wife Leela, and Rosalie, the couple’s young daughter) from a roughly two-year stretch-from 2009 to 2011. In his latest work, the skillfully-rendered graphic memoir, Rosalie Lightning, Hart shifts into a different gear, exploring a more reflective and haunting experience from his own life. In Hutch Owen, Hart dug into anger, but he also explored hilarity and triumph. Tom Hart, the Eisner-nominated cartoonist who is perhaps best known among comic fans for creating the idealistic, homeless, and brazen underground character Hutch Owen, is a master of capturing the full spectrum of human emotion. The Land begins with a “Note to the Reader” that speaks both to the part that Mildred Taylor’s own family played in writing these stories, and to the difficulty of the subject matter and the language used in describing it. Taylor’s writing marries historical fiction with autobiographical stories passed down to her by her father, uncles, and other family members. While book awards are not necessarily an indication of literary merit, we did want to note these awards because perhaps no living children’s book author deserves more recognition and admiration than Mildred Taylor. Taylor also received the Newbery Medal for “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” in 1977. Taylor was the 2002 Coretta Scott King Awards Author Winner in 2002, making Taylor a four-time Author Winner, as well as a two-time Author Honor recipient. Like Mildred Taylor’s other books, The Land, has been received with critical acclaim, and rightfully so. The book is set shortly after the end of the Civil War, and it follows Cassie’s grandfather, Paul-Edward (or sometimes simply Paul), from childhood through the early years of his manhood. The Land, first published in 2001, is the powerful prequel to the other Logan family books ( Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Let the Circle Be Unbroken The Road to Memphis and four other short novellas). Now, Nicholas Sparks has written over 20 books, including A Walk to Remember (1999), Dear John (2006), and The Choice (2016), all of which have been adapted for the big screen. Published in October 1996, The Notebook rocketed to the top of The New York Times Best Seller list and remained there for a year. The publisher clearly liked what they read-they gave Sparks a $1 million advance. He secured a literary agent in 1995, and The Notebook was quickly picked up by Time Warner Book Group. It was during this period that he was inspired to write his first novel, The Notebook. Sales were modest, though, and Sparks continued to support himself by working as a pharmaceutical salesman in the early '90s. Sparks' first book, published in 1990, was a nonfiction book co-written with Billy Mills called Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding. Neither was ever published, however, and Sparks worked a number of different jobs in his first years after graduating from Notre Dame. He began writing in college, during which time he produced two novels. He is a native of Nebraska, though he has lived most of his adult life in North Carolina, where his books are set. He's sold more than 105 million books worldwide, and 11 of his novels have been turned into films. Sparks has written over 20 novels in his career, all of which have been best-sellers. If you're a reader who loves uplifting romantic novels, you've probably read a few Nicholas Sparks books. Each page features a phrase that includes an idiom, along with a humorous illustration of the child literally living up to that particular expression. The boy from Parts (1997) and More Parts (2001, both Dial) returns. Even libraries without the first two titles will find this a fun choice for sharing aloud and for tempting independent readers.- Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha's Public Library, WI Arnold's art manages to keep the gross-out factor reasonable while producing plenty of laughs. The rhyming, which has always been a weak point in the books, is kept to a minimum while the chaos is kept at the previous high level. Created with colored pencils and watercolor washes, the bright, manic artwork features pop-eyed characters drawn with a loose, squiggly line. Along the bottom of the page, his toys illustrate additional figures of speech ("It makes my head spin," "I laughed my head off," "My head is in the clouds"). For example, for "I lost my head," the headless youngster wanders around with arms outstretched looking for his missing body part, which is partially concealed behind a chair. |
